Real Wedding ~ Shawn and Elizabeth

Shawn and Elizabeth hosted the perfect Summer-time soiree, complete with a beautiful outdoor ceremony underneath an apple tree, wildflowers galore, lawn games and the most scrumptious brunch inspired by Southern fare.  Shawn and Liz are dear friends and I felt so privileged to design a beautiful wedding day with such a lovely couple!

How beautiful is Elizabeth’s Lazaro dress?  Talk about a stunning bride!!The gorgeous ruffles and perfect lace detailing just had Southern belle written all over it!  I love the color palette for the wedding party attire.  The gents sported J.Crew grey suits which I think looked so dapper with Shawn’s navy Hugo Boss suit.  The gals chose their own dress style in either taupe or fig, also from J.Crew.

How sweet are these flower girls?  I love their laid back, cotton summer dresses; they’re not too fussy and perfect for the outdoor venue.  Elizabeth and her bridesmaids crafted custom fans that doubled as programs to let guests know who the players were.

The apple tree under which the ceremony took place was strung with hanging vases of wildflowers and satin ribbons.  They looked so lovely swaying in the breeze!

Every outdoor wedding has got to have lawn games!  How adorable are the custom corn hole bags?

Now, I’ve got a funny story and a few words of wisdom for you.  If you’re going to infuse your own vodka with rhubarb a few days before your wedding, wear gloves!!  Liz, a connoisseur of gourmet cocktails, single-handedly infused all of her vodka with rhubarb to make the glorious “Taste of Summer” signature cocktail.  The only downside, rhubarb will dye your hands hot pink as Liz unfortunately found out!!  She was lucky enough NOT to sport hot-pink palms for her wedding, but it sure was a close call!!

These escort cards were such a fun project.  We put a handful of wildflowers seeds in a kraft paper pouch and then sewed them to a card printed with the guests names.  They were placed in flats of wheat grass with a sign that said, “Sow the Love!”  I just adore sweet favors that do double duty as escort cards!

For a touch of vintage elegance, Liz and her mom sourced mismatched china from thrift stores and garage sales all over Santa Fe and Albuquerque.  There were hundreds and plates and a ton of delicate tea cups and saucers.  The coffee and tea display was just darling!

Each place setting has an adorable, heart-shaped birdseed favor.  This was extra appropriate as the venue, the Randal Davey Audubon Center is also a bird and nature preserve.

OK, let’s talk food!  Liz is a serious foodie and quite the amazing cook herself!  I am so lucky to have been a guest a her table and to chat menus wit her. That said, the wedding feast was fabulous and inspired.  I love that the wedding focused around brunch, probably my most favorite 6 letter word, ever! Liz collaborated with Marja Custom Catering to create a spectacular menu centered around her favorite seasonal brunch items.  The appetizers were highlighted with tomato soup shooters with slices of grilled cheese and fried green tomatoes with grilled shrimp.  Seriously, guests were in heaven!

Guests dined on delicious eggs Florentine, grilled asparagus with tomato salsa, red chile bacon and green chile sausages.  But, the piece de resistance was the blueberry-passionfruit blintz; hot dang they were off the chain!

Then there was dessert!  Yes, I know you thought it couldn’t get any better!  First, there was a beautiful butter cream cake, beautifully accented with fresh summer blooms.  Then there was a delightful array of French Macarons….man, I could eat 1,000 of those!

But, the cutest part was the individual apple-raspberry rosewater pies with a biscuit topper.  Yes, stop traffic, they were not only adorable, they were delicious!  Marja Custom Catering really knocked it out of the park!

The Randal Davey Audubon Center is a really spectacular venue.  The kids were in heaven among the orchards and rolling lawns amidst a beautiful historical adobe home.

Believe it or not it was pouring rain ALL day.  We lucked out and by the time guests arrived, the clouds parted and gave us the most beautiful poolside ceremony.  The cactus was Reid’s idea and our florist, Andrea Soorikian made his vision come to life…out of succulents!  Dinner took place among the glow of hundreds of candles; it was breathtaking! Reid’s mother commissioned me to paint portraits of Reid and Erin in my funky “gouache on Kraft paper” style.  All of the tables were named after old Westerns.  Reid’s father has been collecting vintage movie posters and we were able to raid his extensive collection. One of my favorite details was the cake topper that Erin found on eBay- vintage salt and pepper shakers!

Life, Instagramed

In honor of Facebook‘s recent acquisition of Instragram, I thought I throw out a little honorary post for y’all.  I was a late comer to the game, but I now realize that I FREAKING LOVE Instagram.  My preference is to tweet when it comes to social media, but when I can do it with pictures; especially as a visual person, Instagram is the tee-taas!

The best part about Instagram is that I can totally look like a semi-profesh photog with a lil’ ol’ iPhone.  Hello digital tilt-shift!  I also love that I can easily document my DIY projects and random pretties that pop along throughout my day.  For those of you that don’t already follow me on Instagram, here’s a little re-cap of the latest.

~Welcome to Santa Fe’s only 100% Gluten Free bakery.  This is a big deal people- I can eat bread again, and not hard, dry, nasty, fake bread, but real glorious bread…and pastries, and muffins and cookies!  These are carrot cake muffins with golden raisins and a maple glaze.  I also had an awesome lavender cherry oatmeal cookie.  I realize I am a SUCKER for anything with lavender in it!

¿Donde es el otro mitad de mi naranja?

In other words, “Where is the other half of my orange?”  This may seem like an odd saying; but incorporated into Amber and Craig’s wedding vows, and thus creating a whole orange, it couldn’t be more appropriate.  These two foodies and lovers of all things yummy came together last fall for a beautiful gathering of heartfelt nuptials, a gourmet feast and stunning Santa Fe sunsets.

The two-day wedding was held in the modern home they share together and began with a gathering set on their own backyard patio and surrounding vegetable garden.  The first evening featured an intimate sunset ceremony with personal vows, gentle Spanish guitar and lit only by hundreds of twinkling candles.

We covered a large woodpile and kitchen window to create a ceremony space with linen fabric panels that I designed and assembled.  Since the space was asymmetrical, I created a halo of hanging candles above the couple to bring focus to the “I Dos”.  The result was a contemporary, neutrally colored space for a modern couple.

Here is a sketch I used as we were brainstorming. I’m always amazed at how things actually turn out when they go from colored pencils to nails, dowels and fabric!

The neutral color palette was accented with vibrant flowers from Artichokes and Pomegranates.  Lucca, the flower girl, was so excited to wear a head wreath made from red spray roses and fuchsia Dendrobium orchids.

The second day’s festivities were kicked off with sounds from Savor, who specialize in Cuban street music. Since the main focus was food, tables were set in the garden to allow all the guests to indulge in an incredible spread provided by Marja Custom Catering.

Now for the food part.  I hope you’re ready for this…if you’re even the slightest bit hungry you will be salivating on your keyboard by the end of the post….don’t say I didn’t warn you!

Guests were greeted with a lavender-infused champagne with fresh picked sprigs of lavender to garnish.

This next part was my favorite piece of the entire weekend: a CHEESE cake!  Amber and Craig were an avant garde couple who didn’t want to bother with sugary frosted cakes; so when I suggested they have the ultimate foodie treat: a cake made of glorious wheels of cheese, they we’re all for it! Marja’s talented chefs, Marc and Jean-Luc did a beautiful job of decorating this masterpiece with baby champagne grapes, artisan honey, purple endive and edible nasturtium.

Since the wedding took place in late-summer/early-fall, we were able to take advantage of the season’s final heirloom tomato harvest.  Marja sourced the most beautiful tomatoes from the farmer’s market as well as from Amber and Craig’s own garden.  We created a fabulous action bar for guests to decorate their hand sliced tomato slabs with burrata, Italian Basil pesto, infused Balsamic vinegars, and an array of sea salts.  Holy molars, this was a hit and tasted so amazing!

Guests were also greeted with incredible bite-sized hors d’oeuvres that tasted as beautiful as they looked.

Amber and Craig wanted to gift their guests with a yearly reminder of their weekend spent in Santa Fe, so I created an adorable favor of tulip bulbs wrapped in special bags and a tag saying. “Thank you for joining us! May these tulips be a constant reminder of our love we share with you! ~ Amber and Craig”.  As the evening wound down, the candles continued to glow and the laughter and smiles bubbled like the champagne. It was a truly memorable event with so many gourmet delicacies and special treats.
